The Effect Climate Change Has on Sports

Despite the overwhelming evidence in favor of recognizing climate change as a problem, we, as the people of the world, are still not doing enough to address the issue. We are much more content with browsing social media and promo codes like https://www.bonuscodebets.ie/mr-green/ and others, watching YouTube videos, and following sporting events. Well, it appears we’ve hit a bit of a snag in that last one.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

It isn’t uncommon for football players in the UK to play a few matches while it is pouring. Cricket players and local gaming events are also no strangers to trying their best in terrible weather. That’s just a part of playing in the region. However, when the rains become more persistent and less likely to stop, this becomes a problem. There are more and more events that had to be cut short due to the fact that the weather made the games nigh unplayable.

Rescheduling

As the summers are getting hotter and hotter, there is a rise in concerns regarding the health of athletes. In an effort to adjust to the increasingly difficult circumstances, various sports organizations have been forced to reschedule some of their most followed events. For example, Qatar is likely to host the next World Cup in winter, as opposed to summer, to combat the heat and give the players some respite against the cruel temperatures. They are not the only ones, as the Olympics organizers in Tokyo had to resort to protecting the venue with reflective covers.

Venue Change

Speaking of the Olympics, there is now a trend in the Olympics Committee that is all about choosing the next host and venue solely on how the climate affects the events. It won’t be long until we are faced with the problem of choosing unlikely cities and countries simply because the weather is likely going to be fair when the time comes for one of the noblest sporting traditions in the world.

The Report

The reason we believe that this is not a simple exaggeration of the issue at hand is the fact that the Climate Coalition issued a report as part of their annual Show the Love campaign, exploring in detail how the climate affects some of our favorite sporting disciplines. Some of the findings are disturbing, including the ones dealing with the Winter Olympics which state that there is an increasing number of potential hosts that are becoming ineligible because they are too warm. Does this mean that we will soon have no Winter Olympics? It’s too soon to tell, but the issue needs to be properly addressed and certain actions need to be taken if we are to avoid this scenario.

Now, we can presume that you are thinking: “Why is there is much focus on how this alleged climate change might affect sports?” The reason is simple – people love sports. In the grand scheme of things, it is very easy to dismiss the concerns as being too sanctimonious and pretentious to be taken seriously. However, the idea of Show the Love campaign is to raise awareness about how this problem affects things we hold dear, including traditional sporting events.

Conclusion

It is still not too late to act. However, if we keep this up, it won’t be just the rising number of heat-related deaths that will give us grief (and it certainly will). We will also have to do away with football, golf, cricket, and a plethora of other sports we like to participate in, watch, or even bet on. This is a wake-up call and we can’t afford to hit the ‘Snooze’ button.
